Quyu qəbirlər. Şamaxı rayonundakı Xınıslı abidəsində aşkar olunmuş quyu formalı qəbirlərdə meyiti və avadanlığı yerləşdirdikdən sonra onun üstünə ağac düzərək torpaq örtmüşlər. Tədricən ağaclar çürümüş və qəbir narın torpaqla dolmuşdur. Quyu qəbirlər e.ə. IV-I əsrlərə aid edilir.
Küp qəbirlər. Tarixi Azərbaycan ərazisinin şimalında geniş yayılmış qəbir tiplərindən olub, Mil-Qarabağ, Şirvan düzlərində və dağətəyi bölgələrdə, Kür çayı sahillərində qeydə alınmışdır. Küplərdə dəfnetmə adəti e.ə. I minilliyin ikinci yarısında başlanmış, eramızın VIII əsrinə qədər davam etmişdir. Təsərrüfat küplərindən çox da fərqlənməyən qəbir küpləri bəzən məhz dəfn məqsədilə düzəldilirdi. Adətən ölünün başı küpün ağzı tərəfdə qoyulurdu. Küpün içinə mərhuma məxsus xırda əşyalar, ərafına isə iri gil qablar və qurbanlıqlar düzülürdü. Küpün ağzı küp qırığı, yastı daş və ya çiy kərpiclə örtülürdü. Küpün ağzı tərəfində şər qüvvələrdən təmizlənmək məqsədilə tonqal qalanırdı. Küplərdə adətən tək, bəzən qoşa və hətta üç nəfər dəfn olunurdu. Küplər çox vaxt ağız hissəsi şimal-qərbə, oturacağı cənub-şərqə tərəf olmaqla böyrü üstə basdırılırdı. Azərbaycan Respublikasının şimal hissəsindəki küp qəbirləri cənub hissəsindəki küp qəbirlərinə nisbətən daha zəngin avadanlığa malikdir. Lakin cənubun küp qəbirləri şimaldakından qədimdir.
Daş qutu qəbirlər öz forma və quruluşuna görə müxtəlif istiqamətli olur. Başqa qəbirlərdən fərqli olaraq bu qəbirlərin əksəriyyəti dağ üstündə və ya dağ döşündə yerləşir. Belə yerlər əsasən subasarlardan qorunmaq məqsədilə seçilirdi. Xınıslı yaşayış yerində tədqiq edilmiş daş qutu qəbirləri eramızın IV-VII əsrlərinə aid edilir.
The dead were buried differently on the territory of historical Azerbaijan. Some populated localities had several cemeteries.
Mound graves were widely spread in the reviewed period and reputed to be the simplest type of this sort. These are mostly quadrangular and oval-shaped. The deceased was put in the grave half- or full-bent. Dimensions of the grave were 2 m wide and 4 m long. The grave was filled with utensils and offerings. Mound burials were uncovered near Khynysly and Chiragly monuments.
Well graves were uncovered near Khynysly and had a well-shaped form. Following a burial ceremony, the graves were covered with trees and filled up with earth. In due course, trees rotted and the grave was covered with loose earth. Well graves go back to the 4 BC. -1 centuries AD.
Jug graves. The point is about the type of burial grounds widely spread and identified in Mil-Karabakh and Shirvan plains and foothills, along the banks of river Kura. The jug burial tradition goes back to the second half of the I Millennium B.C. to last till 8 century AD. Essentially similar to household jugs, these ones were sometimes manufactured for burial procedure only. As a rule, head of the deceased was placed at jug’s orifice. The jug was also filled with personal things of the deceased, while dishes and offerings were placed around it. The orifice of the jug was closed up by a piece of tile and the bottom rested on flat stone or raw brick. A bonfire was made at the orifice of the jug to fight back evil spirits. As a rule, one, sometimes two and in rare cases three deceased were buried in the jug. In most cases, the orifice looked north – west; sedentary posture south – east. Jug burials in the northern part of Azerbaijan are noted for richer ornamentation than those in the southern part. Note than southern jug burials are older than the northern ones.
Stone box graves were differently shaped and intended. As distinct from other graves, this type was located on top of a mountain or its slopes. This was done to protect them against floods. Stone graves discovered in Khynysly region go back to the 4 – 7 centuries AD.
